Chivas USA 0, Philadelphia Union 3 | MLS Match Recap

CARSON, Calif. – Conor Casey had his first multi-goal performance of the season Saturday night, leading the Philadelphia Union to their second road victory of the year with 3-0 result against Chivas USA at StubHub Center.

Casey secured his brace in the 66th minute – following a first-half penalty-kick goal – with a header on a well-timed cross from Cristián Maidana, helping Philadelphia rebound from last week’s loss to the LA Galaxy in the same venue.

Maidana capped the scoring in the 76th minute with a controversial goal that went through Andrew Wenger’s legs as goalkeeper Dan Kennedy pleaded with the referees for an offside call.

There was plenty of dialogue between the Goats and head referee Allen Chapman on the night. The Union got on the board in the 28th minute shortly after Kennedy was whistled for a rare six-second delay of game. Defender Martin Rivero was called for a handball inside the penalty area on the ensuing indirect free kick from Maidana, and Casey calmly scored from the spot.

With the defeat, last-place Chivas USA (2-7-4) dropped their fifth straight game at home and have been outscored 14-2 in that span.

Philadelphia (3-7-5), meanwhile, continued their dominance in the series. The Union have never lost to the Rojiblancos in league play, winning five of seven all-time meetings.

Chivas USA were without starting center backs Carlos Bocanegra (left hamstring irritation) and Bobby Burling (red card suspension), and lost holding midfielder Oswaldo Minda in the 83rd minute when he picked up a red card in his second consecutive appearance. There was a milestone of sorts for Kennedy, who tied Jonathan Bornstein and Francisco Mendoza for the all-time club record with 123 appearances.

Philadelphia finished with six points out of a possible 18 for the month of May, while Chivas USA got only four and sit at the bottom of the Western Conference standings.

The Union return home to face the Vancouver Whitecaps next Saturday, while the Rojiblancos stay in town to take on their cross-hall rival LA Galaxy on June 8. Men of the Match
