Colorado Rapids 1, New England Revolution 0 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

New year, same home cooking for the Colorado Rapids

Dominique Badji scored the winner in the wake of a Dillon Powers set-piece delivery as the Rapids opened their 2017 campaign with a 1-0 win over the New England Revolution at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Saturday afternoon. Colorado ran through the 2016 regular season undefeated at their high-altitude fortress (though the Seattle Sounders knocked them off at DSG Park in the Western Conference Championship), and they kicked off '17 in similar fashion despite the absence of stars Tim Howard and Shkelzen Gashi due to injury.

Three Things

  1. CLEAN SHEET IN COLORADO, CONTINUED: No one in MLS was as stingy as the Rapids last year, as they conceded just 32 goals and posted 13 clean sheets over the 34-game regular season. The defensive heroics continued apace on Saturday. And when the back four did get opened up, Zac MacMath made three saves.
  2. MISFIRING MUSKETS: New England were right in contention to get a positive result in this one until the end. But their finishing let them down repeatedly, most notably when Kei Kamara failed to dispatch a 1v1 chance vs. MacMath in the first half. The new-look Revs attack will try to be more incisive at home vs. Orlando next week.
  3. WELCOME BACK, DILLON: The win brought the home side another bit of good news when talented Homegrown Dillon Serna came on as a second-half substitute, marking his return from the serious knee injury he suffered last summer.
