DC United 1, Atlanta United 0 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

D.C. United just did something that they have not accomplished since April: They won back-to-back games.

A 46th-minute own goal from Michael Parkhurst proved to be the difference as D.C. picked up a 1-0 victory over Atlanta United at RFK Stadium on Wednesday night. Parkhurst accidentally pushed the ball home while trying to defend a cross, and Atlanta never found a response despite winning more than 65 percent of possession.

The result gave D.C. a second consecutive victory following this past weekend's 1-0 road triumph over the Colorado Rapids. It also snapped Atlanta's six-game unbeaten run.

Three Things

  1. CLEAN SWEEP: Atlanta United and D.C. United have met three times this season, and D.C. have prevailed every single time. Wednesday's win gave D.C. a clean sweep of the expansion club following a 3-1 victory in April and a 2-1 triumph in June. An own goal may have proved decisive this time around, but D.C. still put forth a gritty performance that sufficed to pick up three more points.
  2. LACK OF ATTACK: This game was one-way traffic in favor of Atlanta United for much of the 90 minutes, but they were unable to turn that possession into quality chances. Miguel Almiron, Josef Martinez, and Co. finished with 15 shots on the night, but put just two of them on target. This is not the first time the club's explosive attack has gone cold either. Atlanta have scored just three times in their last four games, and are in sore need of rediscovering their top form in order to accomplish their goal of reaching the postseason.
  3. VIDEO REVIEW: There was an instance of Video Review in this match, as referee Ted Unkel stopped the match in the 52nd minute to look at an incident between Marcelo Sarvas and Hector Villalba. Unkel ultimately decided the play, in which Villalba went to the ground, would stand as called; no one was carded or sent off.
