Toronto FC 4, San Jose Earthquakes 0 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

Toronto FC sure look like a team that wants to make history.

Toronto kept on rolling towards the Supporters' Shield on Saturday evening by routing the San Jose Earthquakes, 4-0, at BMO Field. Jozy Altidore led the way with a brace, while Victor Vazquez delivered the game-winning goal and an assist. Jonathan Osorio had the game's other tally.

If being handed a lopsided loss was not bad enough, the Earthquakes were forced to finish the match with 10 men. Darwin Ceren was sent off with in the 72nd minute following the use of Video Review for a tackle on Marky Delgado.

Three Things

  1. DOMINATING: From start to finish, Toronto FC were the superior side on Saturday. It took some poor goalkeeping from Andrew Tarbell for Toronto to open the scoring in the 26th minute, but finding the back of the net seemed a formality for them given how much they were bossing possession and attacking. The Eastern Conference club was not tested much by San Jose, and finished the match with 21 shots, 10 on target, 73 percent possession, four goals, and one big win.
  2. SOMETHING TO KEEP AN EYE ON: It was all in all a banner day for Toronto, but they had one eyebrow-raising development as star playmaker Sebastian Giovinco came off at halftime with quad tightness. While his removal was said to be done as a precaution, Toronto FC and their fans will be hoping that the problem does not linger.
  3. A STEP CLOSER: Toronto FC still have work to do, but Saturday's victory combined with the Portland Timbers' 1-0 win against New York City FC moved the Canadian club nine points clear in the Supporters' Shield race. Should Toronto win that piece of hardware and add it to a trophy cabinet that includes this year's Canadian Championship, they would be an MLS Cup capture away from completing a historic treble.
