Houston Dynamo 2, Sporting Kansas City 1 | 2017 MLS Match Recap

Houston Dynamo fought hard to keep their playoff hopes alive Wednesday night, taking down Sporting KC 2-1 at BBVA Compass Stadium. The Dynamo made it one step closer to their first playoff berth in four years with the win.

After a slow start, midfielder Jimmy Medranda scored first to put SKC up at half, but the Dynamo were not ready to give up the match. In the 63rd minute Tomás Martínez volleyed in the equalizer after a laser cross from defender AJ DeLaGarza. SKC only needed a draw to punch their ticket for the 2017 playoffs, but a late second-half own goal by Erik Palmer-Brown proved too costly. The Dynamo held on to take the first of two matches in less than a week between the two Western Conference competitors.

Three Things

  1. HOUSTON HOLDS ON: While SKC sit comfortably in second place in the Western Conference, the Dynamo are still battling to stay above the playoff line, holding on to the fifth-place position. Wednesday's win puts Houston three points ahead of FC Dallas and four points ahead of Real Salt Lake with just two games left in the regular season. Decision Day will be crucial for the Dynamo.
  2. SKC FALL SHORT WITHOUT MELIA: SKC goalkeeper Tim Melia is expected to miss 2-4 weeks with a hamstring injury sustained against Minnesota United. Despite backup goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra's best efforts, including a stellar save against an early Martínez shot, SKC's offense failed to make it count in the final third. On top of the quiet offense, SKC could not make up for Palmer-Brown's own goal and continue to look to finalize their postseason spot.
  3. REMATCH? Whether celebrating a win or picking up the puzzled pieces, both Houston and SKC will have to move on quickly for a rematch Sunday. Wednesday's match was originally scheduled for August 26, but was delayed due to Hurricane Harvey. Both teams will get back players returning from national team duty for the next game including Houston defender Adolfo Machado, who helped Panama to a 2018 World Cup berth.
