D.C. UnitedDC

DC United 0, Philadelphia Union 2 | 2018 MLS Match Recap

The Philadelphia Union are on a roll.

Scoring goals on either side of the half, the Union went to the nation's capital and came away with a 2-0 win over D.C. United on a hot and muggy Wednesday night at Audi Field.

CJ Sapong opened the scoring at the half hour mark when he tapped in a lose ball after Bill Hamid saved Cory Burke's shot. Fafa Picault doubled the lead after the break when he combined with Sapong and ripped a shot past Hamid.

Philadelphia has now won four straight, and the 12 wins on the year matches the club's high set in 2013.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: Philadelphia now sit 10 points above the playoff line, and find themselves in a unique position of holding a spot, rather than chasing one, as the season winds down. D.C. have stumbled with two straight losses, but are by no means out of contention with games in hand.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: United's Wayne Rooney had two solid chances early to put the home side ahead, but one hit the post and a chip want narrowly wide. Then Sapong finished this one, which was all that was needed:
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Sapong. He started the play that he ended up score on, and then set up Picault to put the game away.
