Houston Dynamo 4, Portland Timbers 1 | 2018 MLS Match Recap

The Houston Dynamo snapped a 10-game winless run in MLS regular season play, as they defeated the Portland Timbers 4-1 at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday.

It was the Dynamo's first win in league play since July 7. The Timbers, meanwhile, break a three-game unbeaten run with the loss.

Portland got on the board early, as Alvas Powell's cross was deflected in by Houston defender Alejandro Fuenmayor, looping over Dynamo GK Joe Willis on its way in.

Houston then got back in the game in the 32nd minute, as Alberth Elis drew a foul, then scored on the subsequent free kick, heading in Tomas Martinez's set piece service to tie it at 1-1. Then, the Dynamo took the lead shortly before halftime, as Elis sent a low cross that was tapped in by Mauro Manotas.

But the Timbers didn't give up, and they thought they tied up the game before the break, but Diego Chara's tally was chalked off after Video Review, because Diego Valeri, who set up the goal, was offside on the build-up.

The Dynamo scored an insurance tally in the second half, as Elis' cross was blocked by Timbers GK Steve Clark, but Manotas followed up on the rebound with an acrobatic volley to make it 3-1. Fuenmayor then scored in the Portland goal to put the game out of reach.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: The win is a boost for the Dynamo, who are out of the playoff hunt but are gearing up for the U.S. Open Cup final on Sept. 26 and need to find some form. For the Timbers, taking the lead on the road and failing to get a result is a bit disappointing, especially with the fine margins in the playoff race at this stage.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: The equalizer woke up the home side and initiated the comeback, and Elis' strong night.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Elis officially had a goal and an assist, but he set up Manotas' second goal as well, and showed when he's playing well, the Dynamo have a shot at getting a result.
