Real Salt Lake 1, Minnesota United FC 1 | 2018 MLS Match Recap

Minnesota United was so close to ending its 6-game winless run. They tied the game late, and thought they had the winner, but Video Review ultimately ruled the play offside. In the end, the Loons and Real Salt Lake settled for a 1-1 draw Saturday night at Rio Tinto Stadium.

The home side took the early lead when Damir Kreilach pin-pointed a shot from outside the area past a diving Bobby Shuttleworth for his team-leading 11th goal of the year.

RSL did well to keep possession and limit the Loons for the first 45 - and nearly doubled the lead if not for Joao Plata's shot hitting the post. But it was a different game in the second half.

Minnesota was unlucky not to tie it on a few occasions, until Miguel Ibarra came through in the 84th when he found himself alone at the six and easily chipped Nick Rimando

Ibarra appeared to put Minnesota ahead minutes later, however the goal was disallowed after Video Review due to Darwin Quintero being offside.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: It was always going to be difficult for RSL to keep up their scoring pace from the past few games, but they took the lead on the night and at least held on to the point. They've only lost one of the last nine, and remain above the playoff line. While there are positives in the second half performance and taking a road point, the Loons extend their winless rut to seven straight. Playoff hopes are fading.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: The reversed late goal was obviously big call, but Minnesota had a golden chance to equalize just after the break, and would have if not for RSL's Justin GladRomario Ibarra got a ball past Rimando and Quintero was racing in at the far post, but Glad got to the ball first at the goal line to knock it away.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Miguel Ibarra gets this for the late equalizer, and 'almost' winner.
