Seattle Sounders FC 0, Philadelphia Union 1 | 2018 MLS Match Recap

Seattle Sounders FC’s winning streak won’t hit double digits.

On Wednesday night at CenturyLink Field, Fafa Picault scored a dramatic late goal to lift the 10-man Philadelphia Union to a stunning 1-0 road win over Seattle, halting the Sounders’ win streak at nine.

Picking off an errant pass from goalkeeper Stefan Frei in the 93rd minute, Picault beat Frei five-hole for the game's only goal, sending the Union to their first win in Seattle since 2011.

The Union, fresh off a 4-1 shellacking at the hands of Montreal, nearly scored another one but a second-half Cory Burke goal was disallowed after Video Review due to Burke being offside.

The Sounders, who also saw their unbeaten streak end at 12, had plenty of chances of their own, particularly in the first 20 minutes and then midway through the second half when Will Bruin missed a chance at an empty net.

Bruin entered the game in the first half in place of injured striker Raul Ruidiaz. Defender Chad Marshall also exited at halftime for the Seattle with an injury, and Union center back Jack Elliott was sent off with his second yellow card in the 89th minute.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: Poised to perhaps have their best season ever, the Union just picked up one of their most impressive wins, stunning the league’s hottest team on the road and taking a giant step toward the playoffs (and a possible postseason home game). They also should now feel more comfortable perhaps resting starters vs. Sporting Kansas City on Sunday ahead of next week’s U.S. Open Cup final vs. Houston. The Sounders, somewhat remarkably, are still fighting for their playoff lives in the West, even after their nine-game win streak. So they’ll look to quickly get healthy and start a new streak with a favorable schedule looming.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: The Union would have been happy to escape Seattle with a point. Picault, with a little help from Jay Simpson — who was making his first appearance since April — made sure Philly would come home with the full three.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Blake made a huge save on Ruidiaz early to set the club record for saves in a season, but we gotta go with Picault, who's now scored in four straight road matches.
