Vancouver Whitecaps FC 0, Seattle Sounders FC 0 | 2019 MLS Match Recap

The Vancouver Whitecaps and Seattle Sounders played to a spirited 0-0 draw in the first Cascadia Cup clash of the season Saturday night at BC Place.

After a first half with few chances for either side, the Sounders turned up the heat early in the second half, but Chad Marshall, making his 400th career regular season start, had his attempt cleared off the line by Erik Godoy and Raul Ruidiaz’s shot was blocked in front of Maxime Crepeau by Doneil Henry.

Gustav Svensson had a go from distance moments later, but Crepeau leapt up to punch it away.

On a quality buildup, Fredy Montero nearly scored the game’s lone goal against his former club in the final quarter-hour, getting a piece of a Lucas Venuto cross into the box, but Stefan Frei dived to his right to get a hand on it.

Frei also saved a late shot by Joaquin Ardaiz who split a pair of defenders before putting a shot on frame. Inbeom Hwang settled the rebound and his attempt was blocked by a sliding Kim Kee-hee, who knocked over his South Korean countryman on the follow through. Referee Robert Sibiga initially pointed to the penalty spot, but the decision went to Video Review and Sibiga had a long look at the pitch-side monitor before the penalty was waved off.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: Neither side will be too upset with this result. The Sounders remain undefeated, now with 10 out of a possible 12 points, while the Whitecaps were much more solid defensively to earn their first point of the season.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: This game was decided late, very late. It all came down to this decision by Robert Sibiga. Do you agree?
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Henry was all over the place defensively for the Whitecaps, lunging to break up crosses and blocking shots, including a late one by Ruidiaz that elicited this reaction.
