DC United 1, Toronto FC 1 | 2019 MLS Match Recap

Toronto FC appear to have put an eight-game winless streak in the rearview mirror, but they were pegged back to a 1-1 draw against D.C. United courtesy of a late Wayne Rooney penalty at Audi Field on Saturday.

Both teams, coming off midweek wins, settled for a point to keep pace in the Eastern Conference with the second half of the regular season kicking into high gear.

Minutes after Rooney nearly capitalized on a mistake by Toronto goalkeeper Quentin Westberg early on, TFC took the lead, as Richie Laryea dribbled through several D.C. defenders before crossing to Nick DeLeon, who swept the ball into the net against his former team.

From there, both teams had opportunities as they peppered the goals, but golden scoring chances were at a premium. D.C. received a lifeline late on as Frederic Brillant drew a penalty, and Rooney converted the spot kick to seal the draw.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: It was a gritty performance on both sides, and little separated the teams. On balance, a draw is probably a fair result, but Toronto's late concession has to be a gut punch, as they looked set to wrap up a six-point week, something they could really use.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Both teams had penalty shouts in the course of the game, but Brillant appeared to be held by Ayo Akinola and referee Robert Sibiga awarded the PK after Video Review.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: It was almost a night where a couple wasted chances would have meant a disappointing night for Rooney. But the star stepped up with the game on the line and made no mistake, as he scored both of D.C.'s goals in a four-point week.
