New York Red Bulls 4, Montreal Impact 1 | 2020 MLS Match Recap

Tom Barlow struck for a first-half brace and Daniel Royer and Kaku scored a minute apart in the second half to lead the New York Red Bulls to a 4-1 win over the Montreal Impact Sunday night at Red Bull Arena

Bojan put the Impact (5W-8L-1D) in front in the fourth-minute, cutting the ball back on his right foot on a blistering shot from distance for his first goal of the 2020 season.

But Barlow responded with his first of the season 10 minutes later, chesting down a Mandela Egbo cross and equalizing with his left foot. It was the first goal the Red Bulls (6W-6L-2D) had scored in four games at Red Bull Arena.

Lassi Lappalainen appeared to put the Impact back in the 19th minute, but the goal was called back for offside. And before halftime, the Red Bulls were in front. Barlow grabbed his second goal in the 35th minute, a tap-in after Royer back-heeled a pass from Cristian Casseres.

Lappalainen had the tying goal on his foot in front of goal in the 54th minute, but David Jensen kicked the point-blank attempt away.

From there it was all one-way traffic for the Red Bulls as Impact head coach Thierry Henry endured an unhappy return to Red Bull Arena.

In the 56th minute, Royer turned on a Kaku through ball and put a deflected shot from 22 yards out past Clement Diop to extend the Red Bulls lead to 3-1. And Royer returned the favor in the 57th minute, serving a ball to Kaku and the Paraguayan international fired home first time.

Casseres thought he had the fifth goal 20 minutes later, but it was called back following Video Review for offside.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: It’s the first winning streak of the season for the Red Bulls with matching 4-1 wins and the embattled club doubled their Red Bull Arena goal total on the night. Henry’s Impact actually had the lead, but once they conceded twice in the span of a minute early in the second half, it was clear an exhausted Montreal side would extend a season-long losing streak to four games. And it ended with another sending off, this time to Luis Binks for DOGSO following Video Review.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: It’s more of a short series of moments, which started with Jensen denying Lappalainen an equalizer with this save. Immediately after, Royer and Kaku’s one-two punch knocked out the Impact.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Barlow entered the game sixth in the league with 1.85 shots on target per 90 minutes played (minimum 400 minutes played), per Opta. But that was without a goal scored. The lanky forward finally opened his 2020 account, and added another, to earn the honor. Honorable mention: Kaku, the string-puller
