New York Red Bulls 1, Orlando City SC 1 | 2020 MLS Match Recap

A stoppage-time equalizer from Brian White earned the New York Red Bulls a 1-1 draw Sunday night against Orlando City SC, cancelling out a second-half penalty kick from Nani at Red Bull Arena.

White’s goal came in the 95th minute after a recycled corner kick, as the RBNY striker turned and volleyed into the far corner past Orlando goalkeeper Brian Rowe.

That negated a PK from Nani in the 56th minute, which arose after Daryl Dike was tripped up by RBNY center back Amro Tarek. After a stutter-step approach, the DP winger sent goalkeeper Ryan Meara the wrong way for a 1-0 lead.

Nani also came close in the 41st minute, only for Meara to kick away the DP’s left-footed drive. He was originally sprung onto goal via a Robin Jansson long ball.

Orlando nearly made it 2-0 in the 67th minute, though second-half substitute Jared Stroud made a brilliant block on Chris Mueller. He tracked back on a fast break, denying an equalizer that would’ve made RBNY’s comeback effort even more challenging.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: After Toronto FC beat Atlanta United 1-0 Sunday, Orlando are into the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs. It's incredible to see the club’s progression under head coach Oscar Pareja, especially after their first five years in MLS never resulted in a postseason bid. They're also now 12 games unbeaten (6W-0L-6D). For RBNY, they showed incredible resiliency to salvage a point. They’re still comfortably in a playoff spot, though the Eastern Conference pack is tight beneath them.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Was there ever any doubt? Brian White’s second goal of the year saved RBNY’s skin, and what a wonderful bit of skill it was from the 24-year-old deep into second-half stoppage time.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Daryl Dike was an absolute handful all evening, and that’s aside from drawing the second-half penalty kick. The MLS Rookie of the Year contender displayed remarkable hold-up play, occupying both RBNY center backs to let wide attacks flourish.
