Chicago Fire FC are looking to create some separation above the playoff line in the Eastern Conference and continue their strong home form when they take on the New York Red Bulls Saturday night at Soldier Field.
Fire FC (5W-8L-5D) are just one point above the line after rallying to earn a 2-2 draw against Sporting KC at Soldier Field Saturday afternoon, while the Red Bulls (8W-8L-3D) also secured a home point thanks to a stoppage-time equalizer in a 1-1 tie against Orlando City SC Sunday night at Red Bull Arena.
Chicago Fire FC
Robert Beric and Djordje Mihailovic scored stoppage-time goals in each half, with Mihailovic capitalizing on a gaffe by Tim Melia, as the Fire moved above the playoff line with a 2-2 draw at Soldier Field Saturday. Chicago are now unbeaten in their last five in their return to Soldier Field.
"I think coming back is always important," Raphael Wicky said after the match. "We came back twice today at home, in a difficult game against a good opponent who is full of confidence. They're very well in the rankings. We came back twice, that shows character, the team never stopped fighting."
New York Red Bulls
Brian White scored the tying goal deep into second-half stoppage time to cancel out a Nani penalty kick as the Red Bulls rallied late for a second straight game to earn a draw. New York extended an unbeaten streak to three games and have not conceded in the run of play during that same stretch.
"I think it’s a lot of work rate, guys getting into a good routine, a good rhythm, being pushed in training by everybody else, and have everybody holding each other accountable," interim coach Bradley Carnell said after the match. "Every day the players are going to the limit, to earn their spots and earn their minutes. We’ve got a good thing going, in terms of competitive will amongst the group, which is propelling us to perform at a higher level, at an excellence that we expect of the guys."
